The Soup on E!
What I Was Hired to Do
As part of my degree in Television Production at Boston University in LA, I was required to find an internship. At The Soup, I performed intern duties including reviewing tv shows and finding clips to pitch to the writers, coffee orders, arranging breakfast, being on hand for tapings and any other tasks.
Accomplishments
Managed to pitch three different clips that made it to air!
Was told I was the top candidate after going through an involved hiring process. This was proven when NBC tried to rescind hiring me because of my citizenship but The Soup team fought to keep me and disclosed that they did not regret their decision in the least.
Additional Thoughts/Learnings
In show business, there are some strict rules about ‘not bothering the talent’ and so I took a ‘diligent but speak when spoken to’ attitude to the work. I made sure to always do whatever I was asked and received great feedback for being on top of things.
However, when talking to my manager towards the end of the placement, I learned that I would have not been considered a nuisance if I was more forthcoming with my curiosity or if I was to try and take more initiative. In fact, I would have achieved ‘Rockstar Intern’ status. Now, I try to keep that lesson in mind and am never too intimidated to ask questions or speak up, understanding that, in the right environment, this should always be appreciated.
